Online Life Coaching: Is It Right For Me?
The coaching sphere is growing by the minute, due in part to online life coaching and the ability to connect with people from all over the world. But is it more of a con then an actual solution for people who desire coaching? Let me cut through the spin and examine the positives and negatives from a person inside the industry.
Online life coaching: 3 reasons it’s the best thing ever!
- Going online brings the previously out of reach, within reach. For the isolated person through distance or an inability to travel, coaching online can be a real solution. Without leaving the house, you can access some of the best training and coaches the online life coaching world can offer. All you need is an internet connection and computer, and you’re away!
- It’s often more affordable, sometimes by has much as half! When the coach is able to coach from their own home or office, all costs associated with travel, hiring a space, buying coffee etc evaporate. It’s often the cost that turns people away from even seeking out a coach, so going online clears the way.
- Online life coaching can create a sense of safety for the client. Instead of feeling ‘in the spotlight’ during a face to face session, online life coaching allows the coachee to be in an environment that is comfortable for them, which increases the likelihood of more sharing and openness.
There are certainly some incredible benefits to online life coaching.
And now, for the alternate view.
Online life coaching: 3 reasons it’s a lesser option
- It’s impersonal. The space between the coach and coachee is too great because of the screen between them. The screen adds a certain tone that can easily halt the flow of ideas and conversation which hinders the overall outcomes of intended coaching success.
- You miss many important cues. Body language, surroundings and other physical attributes are missed through not being in the same room. These cues are more important than we realise, and by not having them many things are missed and the coaching relationship may suffer.
- It’s a fraction of the benefit received during a face to face session. In a face to face session, a coach may bring resources, props, draw diagrams and present other tools for the coachee to explore and have a hands on, creative experience with. These little extra bits can be the additional 10% that makes the coaching experience that bit more fun and enjoyable.
As you can see, both online life coaching and face to face have there place. They both offer something slightly different, however the core coaching experience of goal setting, creating motivation, building confidence and planning a way forward is still present.
There is more than one way to skin a cat, and so it is with life coaching. It’s an individual choice and something that can be discussed with your coach during an initial complimentary session. Choosing the right approach isn’t the ‘be all and end all’, but it will impact the outcome.
In the end, you need to choose which is the right fit for you.
Online life coaching or face to face, they both can achieve amazing results.
